Today's speakers were MaryAnn Bencin and Dr. Amanda Barber from MaryAnn's Family Hearing.  The mission of MaryAnn's Family Hearing is:
  • To be responsible - by providing our clients with quality hearing products, supportive counseling and reliable service
  • To serve - by focusing on each person as an individual, unique and important
  • To educate and encourage - so that we may enrich the lives of those who trust us with their care
MaryAnn gave some history about how MaryAnn's Family Hearing began, and highlighted that they are in new space on Mentor Avenue after a fire devastated their former office after ten years of operating there.  Dr. Barber presented some information on hearing loss and current hearing aid technology.  Hearing loss is not necessarily due to old age; it can affect people at any age and can also be hereditary.  It can also be due to prolonged exposure to loud noise, as in construction jobs, or from exposure at loud concerts.  We were surprised to learn that only 20% of those who need hearing aids wear them.  This might be due in part to people not being aware in the huge changes in hearing aids: they are very small now, and could easily be worn without being detected.  This is in contrast to how they used to be, and how many people still imagine them to be - bulky, and obvious to everyone the wearer sees.  In addition, hearing aids are now able to work together (the left and right) to filter noise in a targeted way - so they don't just amplify all noise equally.  They are actually able to filter specific to whatever environment the wearer is in.  A lot of information was presented, and MaryAnn is happy to return at any time with presentations tailored to any topic the group would be interested in hearing more about.  In the meantime you can find more information at their website: http://www.maryannsfamilyhearing.com/.
