We were invited to join Mentor Rotary at Taste of Auburn, the restaurant run by the Culinary Arts students at Auburn Career Center. We had a great buffet lunch of salad, salmon, kielbasa and cabbage, stuffed philly steak peppers, grilled vegetables and garlic toast and a blackberry coffee cake for dessert. The students did a great job and Dr. Galvan (Superintendent) spoke about the programs and improvements made in the past year at Auburn. It was a great change of pace to go to an off-site meeting.
The Culinary students who prepared and served our food. Other pictures can be found in the photo album, Taste of Auburn.

Nora Sharpe, winner of the Painesville Rotary 4 Way Speech Contest.

Today we had the Painesville Rotary 4 Way Speech Contest. Rotary began the 4 Way Speech contest in 1932. Herbert Taylor, a Rotarian, and business owner held the first 4 Way Speech Contest. When his business was going bankrupt he decided to apply the Rotary International 4 Way Pledge to his company. The pledge actually turned the company around, changed the environment and helped to fix the problems within the company. The contest grew from that realization.

Our lone competitor and winner was Nora Sharpe. Nora is a junior at Riverside High School. She brought with her 2 teachers, her mom, and her friend.  In her speech she spoke about how fear can take over our reality. She used the 4 Way Pledge to show how she herself dealt with the devastating news that her father had  a terminal illness after a long battle of trying to find out what was wrong. Even though the doctors told him nothing was wrong, fear took over and life changed for the whole family. Through their family struggle and diagnosis she recognized the people who were with her and others who helped her to get through and continue to get through this difficult family struggle using the Rotary International 4 Way Pledge.

Nora will be competing at the district 4 Way Speech Contest on April 18th. Keep her in your thoughts. We are all rooting you on Nora!
Brian Kane, Chairman of the 4 Way Speech Contest, Nora Sharp, 2026 winner of the 4 Way Speech Contest, and Dan Garry, President.

November 15, 2025

Today, at the Perry Outdoor YMCA a bench was donated in memory of our long time Rotarian Dr. Donald Lucker. For several months we have been collecting plastic film, and the hard work finally paid off in early October, we received a composite bench. We knew after Don's passing that the bench would be donated in his honor, we just didn't know where.

In early November, Dan Garry was approached by the parents of Sydney Brown, Brad (past Painesville Rotarian) and Becky Brown with an idea; because their daughter Sydney and Dr. Lucker were so close, why not place the bench near the tree that they planted in her memory at the Perry Outdoor Y. So the wheels were in motion and on Saturday November 15th the bench was placed. Dan will attach the memory plate at a later date, recognizing "Doc" and his 57 year contribution to the Painesville Rotary.

To avoid interfering with other Holiday parties, we decided to have our party in mid January. Fun was had by all, with great fellowship and food. We also had a white elephant gift exchange. There was lots of wine, some alcohol but boy did Pam and Chris flip over the O'Cedar spin mop. Pam stole it from Dick and then Chris stole it from Pam (they use to friends, but I guess "mop" before "top" buddy rules).
Chris will NOT let Pam have it.

Here are some pictures from the party. Those people who could not make it to the party were missed.

Others besides Chris went home with some great presents.
The food was excellent as always, more dinner like than our usual lunches. Beckie and Dan did a great job with the desserts.

Our speaker today was Gina Fletcher. Gina is the Director of Youth Programs at Leadership Lake County. Gina incorporates lots of ice breaker activities when she is doing her youth programs, so what better way to start a presentation than with a little ice breaker and some candy?! Each member got to choose 2 pieces of candy. Gina asked yes or no questions and if you answered yes to the question, you had to pass a piece of candy to your right, if you answered no you kept the candy. It was fun to learn a few things about the people that were sitting at your table. Gina said these activities are great ways to get kids talking and having fun. It worked for the adult also : ).

Gina spoke quickly about all of the programs that Leadership Lake County provides. First, the Signature Class began in 1986 and it's for business professionals and like minded people who want to learn more about Lake County. In 2013 they started the Community Builders Program to get more of the community involved in Leadership Lake County. In 1997 they wanted to get students involved in LLC, so they began the Junior Leadership Program which is for 10th through 12th graders. This year will be their 30th class. In 2003 they wanted to get 7th and 8th graders involved and they began the Youth Academy. And this summer for the first time they will have a camp for 3rd through 5th graders, Camp LIT, Leaders in Training. Gina would really like to get that younger group more interested and excited about Lake County, leadership and learning. The camp will be a one week program in June. All programs are a unique behind the scenes look at many places in Lake County.

The Junior Leadership program meets 1 day monthly and culminates with a service project which is designed to be a community impact project.  Gina highlighted some of the past service projects. Her favorite was when one of the classes planned a senior prom for students with disabilities and another was Paws for a Cause, the students set up 3 areas in Lake County where families who could not afford to feed their animals could go to get food and other items for their animals. Through Junior Leadership the participants learn how to serve and make great lasting connections while learning and experiencing Lake County in a way they may never have been able to up to this point.

SS Kids Fundraising project,  is the main service project for the Youth Leadership Program. The participants in the Youth Leadership Program help collect and pack bookbags prior to school beginning in collaboration with the Salvation Army as their culminating activity. These students, like the Junior Leadership Program, meet once a month for 9 months, to learn the basics of goal setting, communication, time management and community service skills. Each month both youth groups focus on a topic: history, business, public safety and justice, health and human services, and government. The students have on site visits, guest speakers, and experimental learning experiences.
Please visit their website if you know of any students who might be interested in the youth programs offered, or if you are interested in learning about Lake County through the adult programs: https://www.leadershiplakecounty.org/

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿ™‹Guests/ Guest Speakers
We were delighted to welcome April Baragtian from the University Hospitals fundraising team as our guest. April shared a bit about her work, and weโ€™re looking forward to continuing the conversation at our upcoming offsite meeting on April 15th at Tripoint. It promises to be an insightful and inspiring gathering.

Our featured guest speaker was Nora Sharpe, the impressive winner of the Painesville Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest. And what a performance it was! Nora delivered a powerful and thoughtful speech on how fear can quietly take hold of our reality; shaping our perceptions and influencing our
choices if we let it. Her message was compelling, confident, and beautifully delivered. Her Rivalry Brian Kane and his spirited, flashlight-assisted, spur-of-the-moment 4-Way Speech attempt was creative and entertaining! But as strong as Brianโ€™s surprise performance was, Noraโ€™s
prepared and polished speech truly stole the show.
Congratulations to Nora on an outstanding achievement. We are proud to have hosted such a talented and thoughtful young speaker. The future is bright!

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™Opening๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™Prayer -Bob led us in a heartfelt prayer, gently reminding us of the blessings we sometimes take for granted โ€” a roof over our heads, comfortable beds to rest in, and food on our tables. Not everyone is afforded these daily comforts, and gratitude should always be close at heart.

Pledge of Allegiance โ€“The Pledge was led proudly and confidently by the one and only Kathleen Cotter, whose enthusiasm carried through the room and had everyone standing a little taller.

Song โ€“Led by Stu Lucker
Stu selected the classic โ€œMy Country, โ€™Tis of Theeโ€ for our song of the day, and we nailed it. All in all, it was a meeting filled with gratitude, pride, and harmony โ€” a wonderful reminder of why we gather each week.

๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ Happy Bucks / Sad Bucks
Dan kicked things off with two Happy Bucks. The first celebrated his and Stuโ€™s attendance at the Rotary Think Tank in beautiful Chagrin Falls, always a great place for fresh ideas and renewed inspiration. His second Happy Buck was for a wonderful group outing to Rabbit Run Theater this
past weekend. Not only was it a fantastic time, but Becky even walked away a winner !!

Stu chimed in with three Happy Bucks (he was clearly feeling it!).
โ€ข One for finally purchasing Dadโ€™s car โ€”> a milestone worth celebrating.
โ€ข Another for the weather behaving far better than the forecasts predicted.
โ€ข And a heartfelt third buck simply in honor of Dad.

Bob added two meaningful Happy Bucks in recognition of March being Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. He shared how proud he is to work for the organization he represents, serving and supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, a cause close to his heart.

โ™  Queen of Spades  Jackpot: $884
                                   Daily Draw: $16
                                   Cards Left: 22..
.the question lingers... will this carry on for 22 more weeks, or could next week be the moment? Only the Painesville Rotary fates know for sure.๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Sue, our resident good-luck charm (sheโ€™s won the daily drawing a few times now!), stepped up with confidence and the room collectively held its breath. Could this be the moment? Sue revealed the King of Diamonds, a respectable draw with the face card.
The Queen still lives, the pot keeps growing, and the anticipation only gets sweeter. Stay tuned...her crown canโ€™t hide forever!

๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ‘‘โ™ Sue walked away with a whopping $16.๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ

โ€ข St. James Meal โ€“ Tuesday, March 17
Dan and Stu reminded us that our St. James meal will take place on Tuesday, March 17th. The menu is still simmering โ€” possibly mac & cheese โ€” but given that itโ€™s St. Patrickโ€™s Day, thereโ€™s been some hopeful whispering about corned beef. Either way, itโ€™s sure to smell delicious and warm more than
a few hearts.
โ€ข Plastic Update โ€“ Weโ€™re Getting There! Lori shared that we are currently at 169 pounds of plastic on our way to earning another lovely bench. While weโ€™re slightly behind where we were at this point last time, momentum is building. So keep those plastics coming โ€”> every bag counts!
โ€ข Diamond Sponsors
Bob reminded us about our Diamond Sponsors; everyone can shine bright like a diamond. For just $100, anyone can become a Diamond Sponsor and have their name or business featured on our dazzling Diamond Wall Hall of Fame. Itโ€™s a brilliant way to support the club and sparkle while doing
it.
Pop Tabs for Deepwood โ€“ A Forever Mission
Stu gave a gentle nudge that weโ€™re still collecting pop tabs for Deepwood. Itโ€™s one of those ongoing acts of kindness that never goes out of style; so keep saving and bringing them in.
Fundraiser Energy โ€“ Sell, Sell, Sell!
Dan rallied the troops with a spirited reminder: sell those tickets! Every ticket sold brings us closer to a successful event and even greater impact.
Fundraising Meeting โ€“ Ridgewood, 3/11 at 6PM
Mark your calendars! Our next fundraising meeting will be held at Ridgewood on Wednesday, March 11th at 6:00 PM. Good food, good company, and great ideas โ€” what more could you ask for?

๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽค Whatโ€™s Your Why? โ€“
Same great members... until we recruit more.

โœ…Four-Way Test
  • ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽคโœจ ๐Ÿ™Œ Stu brought us home with the Four-Way Test, delivering its familiar lines with the kind of energy that put an exclamation point on the meeting.
